Job Summary
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) CV Surgical Specialty is a licensed, certified healthcare provider. They provide direct patient care and have prescriptive authority. They are credentialed, privileged, and billed as an independent provider by Medicare and Medicaid. The Advanced Practice Provider offers medical care based on the supervising physician's scope of practice.
Surgical providers care for both adult and/or pediatric patients and specialize in Cardio Thoracic/Vascular Surgery.
Essential Functions of the Role
Assesses patients' physical and mental condition by performing detailed or focused exams and medical histories. Monitors patients throughout healthcare and develops strategies to avoid hospitalization or shorten stays.
Orders, collects, interprets, and evaluates laboratory and other diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and health care needs.
Prescribes or recommends medical drug therapies or related treatments. Performs procedures according to their training, experience, and approved protocols. Focuses on efficacy, safety, and cost. Recommends interventions to change behavior linked to health risks.
Formulates and implements comprehensive patient treatment plans based on assessments, evidence-based medicine, and standards of care. Collaborates with physicians and team members when appropriate. Evaluates patient's response to health care and the effectiveness of care.
Counsels patients and families on medical processes, illness management, medication, nutrition, and health promotion. Counsels patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with food supplements, over-the-counter medications, and herbal remedies.
Maintains appropriate records detailing the patient's treatment plans and outcomes. Initiates timely consultation and referral when the problem exceeds scope of practice or expertise.
Provide consultation level services for conditions/problems related to the Provider?s specialty and scope, level of experience, and training.
First assist or second assist in the operating room or procedural setting who has completed all required training with the necessary aptitude.
Performs follow-up with patients both pre and post-operatively. May also round on patients in the hospital or see patients in the Emergency Department.
Perform invasive or advanced procedures like endoscopic vein harvest for Cardiac, Vascular, and Thoracic surgery. Follow the scope of practice and the provider's knowledge level as delegated by the supervising Physician.
Key Success Factors
Knowledge of information and techniques to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
Knowledge of practices, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions.

Ability to develop and implement comprehensive outcomes-based patient treatment plans.

Ability to interpret and evaluate laboratory and other diagnostic tests.
Texas RN licensure or RN licensure with compact privilege from a Nurse Licensure Compact state for RNs and LVNs, and Texas APRN.
Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Texas.
Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire or transfer.
RNFA Registered Nurse First Assist certification.
National Nurse Practitioner certification in area of specialty.
